The history of Flor de Cana began with the audacity and determination of a young explorer and visionary from Genoa, Italy, Francisco Alfredo Pellas Canessa. In 1875, at the age of 25, he risked everything by leaving behind his family and the comforts of the old continent to set out on a journey that would mark the beginning of a fascinating story of success in the exuberant Nicaragua, land of lakes and volcanoes, giving birth to Flor de Cana.
5 Generations of Family Tradition
In 1890, Francisco Alfredo Pellas Canessa, along with the founders, began to celebrate the end of the agricultural harvest season with small quantities of aged rum. 126 years later, the entire production process continues under the supervision of the same family (five generations of mastery and family values), achieving perfection in rum making.
Flor de Cana is born at the base of the San Cristobal volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Latin America, in a highly fertile and mineral-rich soil that produces rich molasses and a smooth and balanced rum. In addition, the volcanic climate and water enriched by the soil’s organic minerals contribute to the rum’s unique flavor. This distinction is why Flor de Cana is known as the rum of the land of lakes and volcanoes (Nicaragua).
Naturally Aged in Bourbon Casks
Flor de Cana’s signature Slow-Aged process means that the rum is naturally aged in small white oak bourbon casks sealed with plantain leaves, producing a distinguished and elegant rum with tropical notes. This uninterrupted aging process gives the rum its remarkable amber color and rich flavor without the aid of accelerants, unnatural additives or added sugar.
